Chris was born to a bartender and his love-interest-of-the-week, creating a most dysfunctional family. The family was so dysfunctional in fact, that his mother split after she gave birth and Chris grew up without a mother, learning everything he did about life and women from his father.

That explains everything.

Really, life wasn't so bad growing up without a mother. Chris spent a good majority of his life helping his old man run the bar, doing everything from busting tables to mopping the floors. It was in the bar that Chris learned the art of dodging thrown beer bottles (he learned to dodge after the first one hit him), and how to toss drunks out on their bums if they don't pay their tabs. Truthfully, had things turned out different, it might be Chris running the bar today.

When Chris was about twelve, he met a group of ShinRa employees that had come to the bar in their off time. He overheard tales of adventure and battle, and like any twelve year old boy it excited him. He swore he'd grow up to become a soldier, to brave the world, fight the good fight, and go down in a blaze of glory.

Cut the kid some slack, he was twelve. He didn't know what a blaze of glory was.

So once Chris was old enough, he ran off to join ShinRa so he could get into the action. Sadly, he didn't realize the action was usually a bunch of drills and patrols where absolutely nothing happened. Somewhat heartbroken, he continued to work his way up in rank in hopes that maybe, just maybe, he'd get to see some action. It wasn't so much that he never got to see action, because he did, but it was never the "brave the world, fighting pirate ships and aliens" type talk he heard as a child. In hindsight, he may have confused the stories he heard with the bedtime stories his father told him.

About four years ago, Chris was selected to join the elite ranks of SOLDIER. He experienced more of the adventure that he wanted here, but it came at a price: it was after joining SOLDIER that Chris realized how dangerous the job was. It was then that he watched people he knew -- even if just vaguely -- die. It's not exactly something recruiters put in their ads, and even if they did kids craving adventure would ignore it anyhow. Watching people die shook Chris, showing him that the job was actually a lot more serious than he had previously thought, and forced him to rethink his occupation.

If anything, it made him more determined. It also never actually pushed the smile off of his face, nor did it jade him as much as it could have. Instead, determined to make the world a better place through his occupation, Chris put forth the effort to become great like the SOLDIER hero Sephiroth. He wanted people to see him and see their job was important, that they could make the world a better place. In Chris' head, becoming a First Class SOLDIER looked a bit like one hell of a great PR campaign for ShinRa, but would help the world a lot too.

A year ago he moved up in rank to Second Class. He spent his spare time trying to befriend the people he saw the most, even if they wanted nothing to do with him. He felt that if there was some way he could make even the most boring person in the world feel like they were important, and that they'd be remembered, he'd done his job. This new found attitude didn't really do much other than drive people insane, but the guy had a big heart and wanted to help.

Chris is an extremely happy-go-lucky person, with a generally big heart. He tends to be overly accepting of most people, and it only takes a sap story for him to want to get actively involved in helping someone. He's a social butterfly, and somewhat of a gossip. He's not very quick to anger, but if he falls silent it's probably time to watch out -- it's a telltale sign he's grown either irritated or angry, neither of which are a good sign. He idolizes the SOLDIER Generals as people who can truly change the world, and wants to be just like them. He still holds some of his childhood dreams in his heart, like wishing to seek adventure at every turn, but he's learned to tone it down a lot. He still always reeeeeally wants to open that chest in the corner though, just because it's there and it's shiny.
